Discover the Long Grind XL: an optimized grinding attachment, specially developed by woodturners, for woodturners and bowl turners!

This sharpening attachment fits, among others, the Fingernail arm of the Sorby Pro Edge Sharpening Systems.

This Long Grind XL is an extended grinding attachment compared to the original Pro Edge Long Grind to better suit the specific cutting angles required for Woodturning and Bowl Turning gouges such as Sorby and Hamlet.

Developed in collaboration with woodturner Peter Peer, this extended version produces the following cutting angles: 45°*, 50°, 55°, 60°.

  • *The first hole (45°) is for reference only; use your original 1-hole grinding attachment that comes standard with your Fingernail arm.
  • The second hole gives an angle of 50 degrees . Note: with short handles or tools it is sometimes not possible to use the 50 degree position. With a new scale turning gouge from Sorby (842LH) it is possible to use this position.
  • The third hole gives an angle of 55 degrees . This is used for shell turning gouges.
  • The fourth hole gives a 60 degree angle. This angle is used for bowl turning gouges which can cut the bottom of deep bowls.

The holes should be tight; Too tight? Sand them down with sandpaper wrapped around a stick.

Pro Tip: Watch Woodturning instructor Peter Peer's instructional video for optimal results! (starting at 19:15)

Notice 3D Printed Accessories and Attachments

  • The use of any accessory or attachment other than that recommended in the operating instructions of the original product for which such accessory or attachment was manufactured may result in risk of personal injury or damage to the machine and will void the warranty.
  • This accessory should only be used by persons who have experience with the original product and are familiar with the risks of using it.
  • BASt is not responsible for damage caused by any use of the original product for which this accessory or attachment was made other than as described in the original user manuals, technical specifications and other published guidelines for its use.
  • BASt is not affiliated with and has no relationship with companies for which accessories are designed. BASt therefore has no influence on adjustments, product versions or other changes in the products for which the accessories are intended. Therefore, no rights can be derived from this.
  • 3D printing uses so-called Fused Deposition Modeling, which means that the print is built up from thin layers that are melted together and thus form a whole. It is therefore normal that you still see some lines. It is also possible that a small thread is hanging somewhere or that you see a bump; this does not affect the quality of the product.
  • Because the tolerances for sizes are small, it can happen that your accessory fits tightly or does not fit. In almost all cases, this can be trimmed with sandpaper or a knife. In some cases, I have already done this myself, which is why you see a slightly different color there. In that case, there is no wear, manufacturing defect or second-choice product.
  • If you have any doubts, please contact me and I will be happy to help you.

Materials

A 3D print can be done with different materials. The most used materials are:

  • PLA-ST, a high strength and toughness plastic made with starch raw materials derived from renewable plant resources. This material has a very high impact resistance, but does not withstand temperatures above 50°.
  • ABS+, Suitable for temperatures up to 100° and impact resistant.
  • PETG, A material similar to the material PET bottles are made of, suitable for temperatures up to 85°.
Each material has its own specific properties, which can be advantageous or disadvantageous for a particular application.

3D printed items are printed in the material best suited for the intended application.
For example, ABS+ is chosen for grinding jigs. This has a high temperature resistance, but keep an eye on it (also for your gouge itself) that you do not let the metal you are grinding get too hot.

To colour

For my prints I try to keep a consistent color choice at all times. Unfortunately spools are not always in stock and I will have to choose from the available options.
The preferred color is always indicated in one of the product photos.

If you have a specific color preference, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Note: Colors are always approximate; screens and product lighting may produce different shades.
